Kenneth G. Saag, M.D., M.Sc.

Kenneth G. Saag is Associate Professor of Medicine and staff physician in the Division of Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in Birmingham, Alabama. In addition, he is a board member of the Gout & Uric Acid Education Society.
Dr. Saag also is a scientist at the Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Center, a scientist and clinical research group leader at the Center for Metabolic Bone Disease, a scientist for the Center for Outcomes and Effectiveness Research and Education and the Center for Nursing Research, a scholar for the Lister Hill Center for Health Policy and a director for the Center for Education and Research on Therapeutics of Musculoskeletal Disorders.
Dr. Saag's current research focuses on the epidemiology of osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis, as well as methods to translate evidence into practice for both arthritis and osteoporosis.
Dr. Saag has served as a member of more than 20 professional societies, councils and committees, and is currently the chair of the Review Committee for the Clinical Outcomes and Therapeutics Study Section for the Arthritis Foundation. He also has served on several editorial board committees, including serving as the osteoporosis section editor for Current Rheumatology Reports.
Dr. Saag has been published in more than 50 peer reviewed manuscripts and/or press articles. He also has authored more than 10 books and/or book chapters, as well as published 75 abstracts. Dr. Saag is a notable lecturer and the recipient of numerous awards, including the Max Cooper Research Award.
Dr. Saag received a bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and his medical degree from Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois. He also received a master's of science in epidemiology from the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa. He completed his internal medicine residency at Northwestern University, Evanston Hospital in Evanston, Illinois, and a fellow in rheumatology at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa.
