Richard J. Johnson, M.D., F.A.C.P.
Board of Directors, Gout & Uric Acid Education Society
Richard J. Johnson is the chief of nephrology, hypertension and transplantation, J. Robert Cade professor of medicine and professor of physiology and functional genomics at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida. In addition, he is a board member of the Gout & Uric Acid Education Society.
Dr. Johnson's major scientific contributions include studies examining the role of mesangial cell proliferation and phenotype change in glomerulonephritis, mechanisms of glomerular injury and repair, the role of growth factors, such a PDGF in mesangial cell proliferation and of the glomerular endothelial cell in maintaining glomerular health. He also has identified elevated serum uric acid levels as being a potential player in the development of some forms of hypertension and renal disease.
Dr. Johnson has received numerous honors in his career including the American Society of Nephrology/American Heart Association Young Investigator Award; membership in the American Society of Clinical Investigation; and the Barry M Brenner Lectureship at the American Society of Nephrology. He has lectured in more than 25 countries and received several distinguished lectureships, including the Inaugural Priscilla Kincaid-Smith Visiting Professor in Australia and the Tokyo Forum speaker. He has been a member of numerous editorial boards for publications such as Kidney International, Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, American Journal of Kidney Disease, Hypertension, American Journal of Physiology and American Journal of Nephrology.
Dr. Johnson is coeditor of Comprehensive Clinical Nephrology with Dr. John Feehally, which is highly regarded as one of the better clinical textbooks in nephrology, and the first edition won the Highly Commended award from the British Medical Association Book Competition in Medicine. He also has published more than 320 articles, for which more than 20 have received more than 100 citations.
Dr. Johnson received his medical degree from the Univeristy of Minnesota in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and then underwent his residency in internal medicine and fellowships in nephrology and infectious diseases at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington.
