Thomas C. Dowling, Pharm.D., Ph.D.
Board of Directors, Gout & Uric Acid Education Society
Thomas C. Dowling is associate professor and director of the Renal Clinical Pharmacology Laboratory at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy in Baltimore, Maryland. In addition, he is a board member of the Gout & Uric Acid Education Society.
Dr. Dowling's primary research areas include the study of kidney function as it relates to drug elimination, and pathophysiologic changes associated with chronic kidney disease, renal transplantation and heart failure. He is also interested in clinical pharmacokinetics, pharmacogenomics and drug metabolism in the kidney disease and dialysis populations. His laboratory is involved in development of in vitro models (MDCK, HK-2, hPTEC) to study renal tubular secretion and interactions at p-glycoprotein, MRP, OAT pathways. The goal of these projects is to better understand the cellular transport mechanisms that lead to renal-based drug interactions in vivo.
Dr. Dowling has authored numerous papers in medical journals such as the Journal of Chromatography, Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics, and Circulation. He also has written chapters for Pharmacotherapy: A pathophysiological approach, Applied Pharmacokinetics and Clinical Pharmacokinetics (3rd Edition) text books.
Dr. Dowling has received numerous awards including Teacher of the Year from the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy, ACCP Research Institute's Roche/Transplant Research Award and the National Kidney Foundation of Maryland's Research Award. He also teaches graduate and professional courses in pharmacology and pharmacokinetics.
Dr. Dowling received an associate of arts and science and doctor of pharmacy degree from Ferris State University College of Pharmacy in Big Rapids, Michigan. He completed a pharmacy practice residency at the University of Maryland Medical System in Baltimore, Maryland. He also received his doctor of philosophy degree in clinical pharmaceutical sciences from the University of Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
